Here is my All-Toronto-Prospect team halfway through the year

C - J.P. Arencibia / 13 games / .313-3-4-10-0 / New Hampshire (AA)

Arencibia has hit for a good average this year, but despite his .313 avg., he hasn't walked once in his 13 AA games. Arencibia needs to watch over his shoulder since Brian Jeroloman is creeping up on him as the future at catcher.

1B - David Cooper / 16 games / .338-2-9-16-0 / Auburn (Low A)

Recent Allegations Tarnish Canada’s Game’s Once Clean Image

The once amazing images of hockey, Henderson scoring in the goal mouth, Orr flying through the air, and Mario Lemieux bearing down on the goal, all seem like distant memories. Hockey’s reputation was as pristine as the ice the players skated on, but hockey fans have had these images replaced by allegations of doping, and the substance abuse by its pro-athletes’. It’s only been three years since Dick Pound accused the NHL of letting players get away with cheating. Pound suggested that one-third of NHL players used steroids or other banned performance enhancers. These comments rattled and shook the hockey world, and Pound was demonized. The NHL, in the wake of Pound’s remarks, promptly put into place a drug testing system. Pound would scrutinize the NHL’s drug testing, due to its lack of off-season testing and the not testing for some banned substances.

Well, it's that time of year again! Opening night for MLB, the first chance for fans to view the upcoming years product. As a Jays fan every year we are slated to finish behind the Red Sox and Yankees, and ever year we do exactly that (except 2006). The Jays have a great all-around team, but things always come up. Be it injuries to Halladay and Burnett, or injuries to key players (the departed Troy Glaus, Lyle Overbay, and Vernon Wells).

This year looks promising for the Jays, as for the first time in a decade they have a true lead-off hitter, the key players are for the most part healthy, and the team is as deep as it has been since back-to-back World Series wins.

Defense

The team has Gold-Glove candidates in Aaron Hill, Alex Rios, and Vernon Wells, along with defensive whiz John McDonald. The infield has the potential to be strong defensively with Scott Rolen, Hill, Overbay and McDonald. Eckstein would be the biggest weakness in the infield, and he will be replaced by John McDonald when Roy Halladay pitches. In the outfield, there are two great defensive outfielders in Rios and Wells. Stairs is a weakness, but is in a platoon with Shannon Stewart. Gregg Zaun is adequate at best behind the plate, and will split time with Rod Barajas this season.
